The simple guide to natural stain removers that work
Are you struggling with stubborn stains, but don't want to resort to harsh chemical stain removers? In this guide, we'll share with you how to remove tough stains from clothing and bed linens, including dried-on food, coffee and tea, grass stains and pen marks, using powerful yet eco-friendly products.
How do natural stain removers work?
Instead of using harmful chemicals, natural stain remover products like Sonett’s stain remover combine organic quillaja extract with sugar surfactants that creates a highly effective yet gentle solution for removing stains, it's even suitable for use on delicate fabrics like wool and silk. Sonett's bleach complex and stain remover uses a natural bleach, hydrogen peroxide, that breaks down into water, soda and oxygen and it's these oxygen molecules that then break down and oxidise the stains. Much better for us and our environment than chlorine bleaches.
All the products we reference in our guide to natural stain removal are 100% natural and completely biodegradable, so they don't pollute our rivers and streams. Any fragrances come from essential oils and extracts from organic or wild grown plants, and there's absolutely none of the nasties you want to avoid - so there's no petrochemicals, synthetic fragrances, synthetic dyes, enzymes, nanotechnology or GM ingredients. Packaging materials are easily recyclable and chosen because they don’t release toxic substances when processed for recycling.
Here's our guide to dealing with whatever life throws at you (naturally!)
Plant based stains Including fruit juice, vegetables and grass stains. Natural plants can stain clothing pretty well, so to remove naturally apply Sonett gall soap direct to the stain, and leave for a few minutes. Then rinse out by hand and put in your wash as normal - hand or machine.
Fat and grease stains A slip up with the full english breakfast or over being enthusiastic with the olive oil drizzling can leave greasy stains that don’t always come out in the wash. Apply undiluted Sonett orange power cleaner, and leave for a few minutes and wash out, or pop in to your regular wash cycle. Sonett’s gall soap or stain removal spray also work too.
Felt tip and ink There’s nothing more annoying than staining your favourite shirt with pen, or maybe the kids have unleashed their inner creativity a little too wildly, but Sonett stain removal spray easily removes these marks. Pre-treat the stain with the eco stain removal spray, and leave for 10 minutes before adding to your next wash.
Protein based stains including milk and blood Give the item a good rinse, and then treat with Sonett gall soap. Apply the liquid version directly to the stain, leave for a few minutes before rinsing out and pop in your usual wash cycle.
Coffee and tea stains A spill with the morning coffee doesn't have to put a downer on your day. Pre-treat the stain with lemon juice or Sonett’s natural laundry rinse. Rinse thoroughly under the tap, and then put in your usual wash. For white and light coloured fabrics it’s even easier - just add Sonett bleach complex to your usual wash to deal with tea spills and coffee stains.
Chocolate stains are easily dealt with with Sonett’s stain removal spray. Spray it on, leave for 10 minutes before rinsing and then straight into your washing machine.
Dried on food stains It’s not always easy to get straight on to stains - when the kids come home from school wearing half of their lunch, it’s had the whole afternoon to dry onto their school uniform. Place the stained clothing into Sonett’s laundry rinse, then rinse with cold water before washing as normal. Adding Sonett bleach complex to the cycle for white and light coloured items also helps.
